Taking the step to attend your first counselling session is a significant act of courage. Knowing what to expect can help ease any nervousness you might feel.
Your counsellor will start by getting to know you — they will ask about what brought you to therapy, your background, and what you hope to achieve. This is not an interrogation; it is a conversation.
You and your counsellor will discuss what you want to work on. Goals might be specific (like managing anxiety) or broader (like improving overall well-being).
Your counsellor will explain confidentiality rules. Everything you share is private, with few exceptions related to safety concerns.
There is no "right" way to do therapy. You can share as much or as little as you are comfortable with. Your counsellor is there to support, not judge.
Be honest, take your time, ask questions, and remember that it is okay to feel nervous. The first step is often the hardest, but it is also the most important.
