When a friend is struggling with their mental health, it can be hard to know what to say or do. Here are some practical ways you can offer support:
Sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is simply listen. Avoid giving unsolicited advice or minimizing their feelings. Let them know you hear them.
Instead of assuming what they need, ask. Sometimes they might want someone to talk to; other times they might need help with practical tasks.
Gently suggest that they consider speaking with a professional. Offer to help them find a counsellor or accompany them to their first appointment.
A simple "How are you doing today?" message can mean the world. Consistent, low-pressure check-ins show that you care.
Supporting someone with mental health challenges can be emotionally taxing. Make sure you are also taking care of your own well-being.
